Ornamental Lake - Learn how to make it at home

Hoje irei contar como foi minha experiência da construção e como fazer um lago ornamental em casa.  Sempre achei muito bonito e tinha a maior vontade de fazer um mini lago na minha casa, e não via a hora que faria isso.

So as I was in the process of renovating my house, I decided that this would be the time to start this long-awaited dream. So I started several researches on what materials to use, how it would be executed, which species would best adapt.

After everything was defined and understood, I started the construction of the lake. I chose to do it in a corner where it wouldn't get sun all day, it would be easier to allocate the filtering system, etc.

Starting the construction of the mini ornamental lake

The process started with marking the site, and what the shape and dimensions of the lake would look like. So we drilled a hole in the ground approximately 1m deep, 1.60m long and 1m wide.

After this perforation, we begin the waterproofing phase. Many people use geomembrane blanket for this waterproofing. I opted for waterproofing using a mortar with additives.

I also used a screen, before applying the waterproofing, so that in the process of curing and expansion of the mortar, cracks and fatal infiltration and loss of water from the lake would not occur.

Decorating the ornamental lake

To make a more natural environment, I used stacked river stones and pebbles to make the side walls of the lake. It didn't work out very well, the stones ended up collapsing after a certain stacking height. So I decided to glue the stones together with mortar.

At the bottom of the lake, I used river sand to give it a lighter look. I also used larger stones at the bottom to make a hole for the fish to hide and not be too stressed when there was more movement of people.

Around the lake, I planted bromeliads, ferns and some other species to give the place a good ambience, and help with shading and comfort of the fish.

The fish species I put in were carp, goldfish and plecos, which would help clean the bottom of the lake.

lake filtration system

For the filtering system, after several researches, I chose to use a barrel-type filter, with overlapping filtering media. I will now explain how each filter media works and how the process is done. These are the types of filtering:

Equipment needed to complete the ornamental pond

Lake water needs to be circulated and filtered at all times. For this, a submersible pump must be used.

One important thing is to choose a pump that filters all the water in the lake at least twice an hour. As my pond has 1000l, I opted for a 2500l/h pump, which would be more than enough for filtering.

It is also necessary a structure that helps in the oxygenation of the lake. As my filter would be higher up, I used the water from the filter to return to the lake, to make a waterfall, which would give a nice look and help with the oxygenation of the water.

I left some photos throughout the article, with the stage of the lake already built, finished and now 3 years old ready, the fish are even reproducing, which indicates ideal and healthy conditions for the life of the animals.
