BIM Platform - Find out what it means for Engineering

Adverts

Currently, with technological development and in the language of information, it is necessary to integrate several utilities in a single language. In engineering it was no different, there was a need for communication between platforms. That's when the BIM platform came about.

Therefore, despite the technological development arising from engineering, this time it was necessary for the systems to act in favor of engineering. The need for agility, economy and, above all, unity in communication, helped to create and improve BIM platforms

There are several software developers using the BIM platform, and as it is not possible to present all the tools, in this article we will present an example of an architecture modeling tool that is currently used.

But after all, what is the BIM platform?

BIM, Building Information Modeling-Building Information Modeling. With the use of these software, it is possible to digitally create an accurate virtual model, offering general information for monitoring and managing the work.

BIM tools are increasingly bringing new fans, and can greatly facilitate and streamline the project development process, but CAD platforms are still used on a large scale, the most common of which is Autocad, from the company Autodesk.

BIM software has been widely used in engineering, as well as in architecture, as it facilitates communication between the various platforms, being tools for structural analysis, architecture, installations, among other possibilities.

BIM x CAD

The big difference between the BIM and CAD platforms, and that in the CAD platforms, the elements are represented simply by lines, in the BIM platform, the fact elements are created, with their dimensions, properties and specific materials.

You can, for example, change the layers of a wall, from the core to other substrates such as roughcast, plaster, paint, and other coating layers. There are several other fields and parameters that can be filled in.

With all this information, the program will generate what in my opinion is one of the most important things, which is to generate quantitative and qualitative information, demonstrating in detail all the elements and constructive methods.

The main software currently used with the BIM platform are

We will present as a BIM modeling tool, Autodesk's Revit software, which allows the modeling of architecture, structure, facilities.

Let's talk a little bit about Revit

Revit is software for creating digital building models. It is a program for the conception of architectural, structural, electrical and hydraulic installations, etc., and works with a multidisciplinary and collaborative BIM methodology, forcing members to work more closely, opening doors for parallel work.

To facilitate modeling, we can use an Autocad drawing inserted in Revit as a reference. With the Autocad drawing inserted as a link, we have the facility to take the endpoints of Autocad lines as a reference.

However, you do not need to enter a drawing to model with Revit. You can directly model the walls once you know the dimensions. With the walls modeled, we can insert the doors that will create an opening in the walls when inserted.

The Revit library

Continuing with the development of the project, we insert the windows using the same process, choose the family and click on the wall where the window will be positioned. When placing windows, it is important to adjust the sill height, select models and edit properties.

We can also insert guardrails, platbands, and various architectural elements. In the case of building modeling, after creating an apartment, it can be mirrored to complete the floor, and with the modeled floor we can create copies for the other floors, and we can see the entire project in a 3d modeling.

Structural modeling in Revit

In Revit, it is also possible to do a structural modeling where from a structure of beams, pillars and slabs already modeled, we can insert the reinforcement in the pillars, in the beams, in the slabs, in the elements of foundations and containments, etc.

To model a column, we can insert the reinforcement starting with the longitudinal bars, selecting the types and then configure the stirrups, selecting the bar, types and spacing. Revit generates the column reinforcement in 3d. To generate a beam the procedure is similar.

For a better visualization, we can configure the model and generate a realistic visualization. In this way, we created a structural model to be used for calculation and analysis, using other structural analysis BIM platforms.

We then get to know the main BIM software used to create 3d architectural modeling, and we can see the range of possibilities that we have on these platforms, and some features of Revit, by Autodesk.
